BFX Studio – Stoked C3BarreMAX

BFX Studio – Stoked C3BarreMAX

I’ve been eyeing this class on Classpass for a while and it’s one of the ones that fills up instantly–possibly because it sounds like some sort of P90X spinoff, possibly because it’s that good. I finally got in, and needless to say, I was STOKED! (I’m so sorry.)

The Studio

BFX stands for Boutique Fitness Xperience (lol), and the studio lives up to its reputation. It’s very spacious with lots of amenities – nice locker rooms and locks, small classes, chic lounge area, etc. The main floor has space for weight circuits and a small group class, but overall, it’s pretty small (there are only a few cardio machines). Personally, I’d feel awkward on the elliptical while everyone else walks around, but that’s just me. There’s also a spin studio (Cyc Fitness) and a room for group fitness classes, which is where Stoked C3BarreMAX was held.

The Instructor

The “Stoked” classes are a series the gym runs with celebrity trainer Kira Stokes. She is absolutely ripped. She looks like if Ellen DeGeneres took steroids and she honestly scares the shit out of me. But, when you’re that ripped, you’re doing something right. She knows what she’s doing.

The Class

Her class was no joke–she does small, isometric barre movements but also makes sure to throw cardio in there to keep your heart rate up. This is a tough barre class that I’d recommend to athletes or anyone who lifts regularly–she describes the class as “fine-tuning” your muscles, which I thought was a cool way to explain barre to someone who normally lifts heavy. The class was packed, so it’s obviously very popular. However, I noticed that she only really made a point to be friendly to/ help out her regular students; it wasn’t the most welcoming environment for a newbie. In fact, she was even a bit condescending towards newbies, telling them not to stand in the first two rows. Not a fan of that.

I’d recommend this class to someone who wants to get their ass kicked, or a serious athlete who wants to see what barre is about. However, between the crowded studio and condescending teacher, I’m not sure I’ll be back to this class. It definitely killed me, though!

The Damage

Drop-in classes are $32, and the price decreases if you buy in bulk. Class packs can be applied to any 60-minute class at BFX.
